How the Canadian School System Works
The school year runs from early September (after Labour Day) to late June. 2026–27 is the current school year.
Most provinces (including Ontario, BC and Alberta) group children by calendar year of birth (31 December cutoff). Quebec uses 30 September.
Ages 4–13
Elementary (Kindergarten – Grade 6/8)
Ontario offers two years of kindergarten (JK at 4, SK at 5). Elementary runs to Grade 6 or 8, depending on the province.
Ages 14–18
Secondary (Grade 9 – Grade 12)
Students earn credits toward their provincial diploma: OSSD in Ontario (30 credits), Dogwood in BC and the Alberta High School Diploma. Graduation is in June of Grade 12.
Ages 12–19
Quebec: Secondary V + CEGEP
Quebec high school ends at Secondary V (Grade 11, age 16–17), followed by 2 years of pre-university CEGEP, or 3 years for technical programs.
Ages 18–22
University & College
Most bachelor’s degrees take 4 years (3 years in Quebec after CEGEP). College diplomas take 2–3 years.

When does the Class of 2027 graduate in Canada?
Grade 12 students in 2026–27 graduate in June 2027. Most were born in 2009 (calendar-year cutoff) and start university or college in September 2027.
What grade is a child born in 2013 in?
In provinces with a 31 December cutoff, a child born in 2013 is in Grade 8 in 2026–27 and graduates high school in June 2031.
How old are you when you graduate high school in Canada?
Students graduate in June of the year they turn 18 (17 or 18 at graduation). In Quebec, students finish Secondary V at 16–17 and then complete CEGEP.
If I start university in September 2027, when will I graduate?
A 4-year bachelor’s degree starting in September 2027 finishes in April–May 2031, with convocation in late spring 2031. Co-op programs often take 5 years.
How many credits do you need to graduate high school in Ontario?
The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requires 30 credits (18 compulsory and 12 optional), 40 hours of community involvement and the literacy requirement.
